The Anointing

 CHAPTER

ONE

Anointing

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder and his yoke from off thy neck and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing” Isaiah 10:27 KJV

Anointing is the divine enablement or grace to carry out a task. Anointing makes task to be done easily. One can either pray under the anointing or by faith. A prayer of faith could take a little stress and the result might not occur instantly but a prayer under the anointing is easier and produces instant results.

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him”. Acts 10:38 KJV

“And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him and a voice came from heaven, which said, thou art my beloved son in thee I am well pleased”. Luke 3:22 KJV

The coming of the Holy Spirit upon someone is the Anointing, the power of God. The anointing oil is not the anointing but just a symbol. Let a gallon of the anointing oil be poured upon a person, if the Holy Spirit does not come upon the person, he/she is not anointed. No anointing oil was poured on Jesus, also on Moses, Elisha and they were anointed by the Holy Spirit.

“Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah”. 1Samuel 16:13 KJV

We saw that after the oil was poured upon David that the Holy Spirit came upon him. That means until the Holy Spirit comes upon one before one could be said to be anointed. If oil is poured on one and the Holy Spirit didn’t come upon him/her, then the person is not anointed. Therefore, the coming of the Holy Spirit upon you is the anointing. It is the Holy Spirit that will determine the way He wants to come upon you, may be after oil is poured on you or not.

“Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him saying, thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest”. Matthew 26:69-70 KJV

Before the disciples were anointed by the Holy Spirit as Jesus had told them until He goes to the Father before the Holy Spirit shall come, Peter couldn’t stand a young girl.

“But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the Earth”. Acts 1:8 KJV

After the Holy Spirit came upon the early Apostles, they received power and were able to stand against any opposition. No matter the calling the Lord has called you into, wait in the upper room till you get anointed. Then, you can stand any opposition from the pit of hell and also fulfill the calling with ease.

“Then he answered and spoke unto me, saying, this is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, not by might, nor by power but by my Spirit saith the LORD of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6 KJV

You can’t fulfill divine assignment with your power but through the anointing. All you need to be successful in your calling is the anointing.

Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity. He is God (2Corinthians 3:17, Acts 5:3-4).

Holy Spirit is represented as follows depending on what He wants to do around us:

1. Dove (Luke 3:21-23).

2. Fire (Acts 2:1-4).

3. Wind (Acts 2:1-4, John 3:8).

4. Rain (Joel 2:23).

5. Water (John 4:13-14).

6. River (Ezekiel 47:1-10).

7. Oil (1Samuel 16:1-13).

The attributes of the Holy Spirit are:

1. He teaches us (John 14:26).

2. He comforts us (John 16:7, John 14:26).

3. He reminds us of things (John 14:26).

4. He purifies us (Malachi 3:3, 1Peter 1:2).

5. He refreshes us (Acts 3:19).

6. He convicts us of sin (John 16:8).

7. He guides us into all truth (John 16:13).

8. He empowers us (Acts 1:8).

The flow of the Anointing

The flow of the anointing can only be controlled by the Holy Spirit. Like electric current, so also, the anointing can flow. This flow of the anointing is what result in the manifestations of signs and wonders.

The anointing could flow directly from heaven upon us on the Earth as we saw when Moses dedicated the tabernacle in the wilderness (Exodus 40:34-35), the dedication of the temple built by Solomon (2Chronicles 5:13-14), the anointing of Jesus (Luke 3:21-22), the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

The anointing could also flow from the anointed servants of God to people. This could either involve a contact or without a contact of the anointed servants with the people:

With a contact: There could be a contact through the laying of hands (Acts 9:17-18), pouring of oil (1Samuel 16:13), through aprons and mantles (Acts 19:11-12, 2Kings 2:11-15), shadow (Acts 5:15-16).

Without a contact:

Read Numbers 11:16-30, Acts 10:44-46.

In Numbers 11:16-30, God transferred His Anointing upon Moses to the 70 elders chosen by Moses for the work of the Ministry.

In Acts 10:44-46, as Peter was preaching in the house of Cornelius, the Anointing flowed to the people that heard the word. There was no hand laid on the people. It is the Holy Spirit that determines how He wants to move.

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” 1Thessalonians 5:21 KJV

“Beloved, believe not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world”. 1John 4:1 KJV

Paul and John admonished us to test all spirits to know if they are of God because there are many lies going all around us. God won’t be angry with you if you test to know if He is the One speaking or manifesting. God was not angry with Moses for asking for test to confirm to him that He is the One speaking. The Lord kept giving Moses proofs to confirm to him that He is the One that has called him. God was angry with Moses after he had confirmed that He is the One talking with him and Moses asked God to send Aaron.

Also, God was not angry with Gideon for confirming that He is the One talking with him. You must confirm the spirit manifesting around you at any time.

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits without partiality and without hypocrisy”. James 3:17 KJV

These are the qualities of the anointing from above. It is pure and peaceful. It never brings fear. The appearance of the LORD to Moses, Gideon, Joshua, Jacob etc never result in fear but in peace and blessing for them. Any manifestation that creates fear around you should be watched carefully. Except someone is an enemy of God, that is when His manifestation can result in fear around one. That is, if He comes as a consuming fire but for us His children, His manifestation around us brings peace and blessing for us.

Classes of Anointing

Indwelling Anointing:

“And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you and shall be in you”. John 14:16-17KJV

“But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you, now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His”. Romans 8:9 KJV

We are saved through the Holy Spirit convicting us of our sin and thereby purifying us by which we become a living soul. At this point of our new birth, the Holy Spirit comes into us and dwells in us by which we become of the spirit and no more of the flesh.

Every believer has this indwelling anointing in him/her which abides within him/her. The indwelling anointing is to build us up. It is the indwelling anointing that bears the 9 fruit of the Spirit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law”. Galatians 5:22-23 KJV

A believer with an indwelling anointing could do great exploit through faith.

The Outpouring anointing:

“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water”. John 7:38 KJV

“But ye shall receive power; after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the Earth”. Acts 1:8 KJV

This is a greater measure of the anointing than the indwelling anointing. It makes you a blessing to others. It is the anointing needed to fulfill the calling God has called one into. The anointing comes upon one when it is needed for service i.e. when needed to fulfill the call of God upon one. It is in measure upon us according to the grace of God in our lives. It was on Jesus without measure (John 3:34).

This anointing can be upon an individual or upon a group of people united for a purpose e.g. a church. This anointing upon a group of people is greater than an individual anointing on each of the members of the group.

“Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of My Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:19-20 KJV

How to increase and maintain the Anointing

1. By studying the word of God (2Timothy 2:15).

2. By praying always (Luke 6:12-19, Acts 4:31-33).

3. Worship God constantly (2Kings 3:14-20, Acts 16:25-34).

4. Have faith in God (Hebrews 11:6).

4. Give glory to God at all times (Isaiah 42:8, Acts 3:1-18).

5.Be obedient totally to God (John 14:21, 1John 3:22).
